Want the look without the risks? Look no further than right here in the 203 – from top-of-the-line organic salons to cosmetic stores with best in natural body-care, we have the scoop on what’s what in New Canaan, Darien and Rowayton’s natural beauty market. And spoiler alert, there’s a lot more than you think.
Located in a historic Darien home, Peartree Salon is impossible to skip for anyone passionate about a truly organic experience. A self-proclaimed “holistic salon,” this boutique keeps its promise: every service offered, from hair care, skincare, waxing and even organic nail care, uses products that are certified organic, vegan, and 100 percent eco-friendly. In other words, no false advertising, which is sweet. Regular customers will tell you the salon’s quiet atmosphere makes for an especially relaxing experience. Even waxing is said to be something of a treat (if you can believe it).
That’s not to say Peartree has a monopoly in this area’s organic beauty market. New Canaan and Darien are graced with several eco-friendly salons. Among them, Synergy Salon, founded in 2006 by a seasoned hair stylist who experienced her own organic epiphany, swears by non-toxicity; in fact, many of her creams are made in-store using ingredients from local farmer’s markets. Besides this, there’s 123 Cherry Street, a hair design/coloring studio that offers services such as smoothing and demineralization treatments. Top-of-the-line Aveda is this salon’s go-to product, which is totally formahedyle-free (and super sleek, we’ll add).
If you’re looking for something a little simpler, we recommend turning to New Canaan’s Lisa’s Classics Cuts, a cozy salon that delivers great prices and reliable, no-fuss cuts every time. While maintaining a low-key atmosphere, the owner manages to stay green with natural products such as Moroccan Oil – a feat we can respect. Conversely, in terms of organic nail salons, we recommend the economical True Grace Nail and Spa, a venue that uses exclusive botanical hydrating lotions with 100 percent pure essential oils.
Spas are bountiful in this suburban trio, as well. In Darien, the reputability of Lanphier Day Spa & Salon speaks for itself – chosen as Paris aromatherapy skin line Decleor’s first U.S flagship spa, the deluxe boutique uses only the highest-quality natural products such as Sparitual (made from plants) and Bare Minerals (made from minerals). While prices can get steep, visitors consistently maintain the masseuses’ expert hands are worth the bill. When visiting, be sure to ask for Francisco Angel, who has been unofficially crowned in the past as Fairfield County’s best masseur.
Over to New Canaan, Aetheria Relaxation Spa is the ultimate venue for serene relaxation. The salon, which offers more than 14 massage therapies and organic facial options, has made a name for itself with its unique universality – according to owner Elizabeth McCarthy, 20 to 30 percent of patrons are men. This is likely to do with the salon’s simple, aromatic atmosphere. The salon also uses only premium products “free from synthetic solvents, thickeners, artificial dyes or fragrances,” which doesn’t hurt.
But what if you are simply looking for a quick fix – say, a product you can grab on the go and apply generously later? Have no fear, patrons: in addition to Whole Foods in Darien – which bodes a number of all-natural skincare brands such as True Natural and Fountain of Youth Skin Care – three cosmetics stores reside on New Canaan’s Elm Street alone.
For any beauty needs, we first say stop by Cosmetic Boutique, which bodes impressive organic beauty supply. The one-stop beauty shop and med spa offers facials, massages, waxing, lash extensions, tanning, and even medical aesthetics (particular to this location) in addition to a wide stock of natural, paraben-free makeup, skin and body-care. From bridal services to personalized shopping and makeup lessons, this store brings fun to the world of health and beauty. Which is cool.
Last but not least, there are reliable cosmetic outlets Space NK Apothecary and Merle Norman Cosmetics in town. At Space NK Apothecary, look for Cane + Austin Sunscreen, a natural sunscreen product loaded with organic UV absorbers and antioxidants. Conversely, at Merle Normal, the store’s Merle Norman Luxiva Purely Mineral Makeup, is an organic product with prices as great its reviews.
