There’s a lot to love about matcha green tea. Not only does the traditional Japanese drink contain powerful cancer-fighting antioxidants, it can also help keep you productive.
“The antioxidants found in matcha are certainly beneficial when it comes to reducing your risk of disease,” said Amy Fischer, a Manhattan-based dietitian who works with clients in Fairfield County. “Just make sure you choose unsweetened versions in order to fully benefit from the superfood.”
And yes, it contains caffeine, but Fischer says it shouldn’t give you that same buzz that you can feel from coffee or black tea.
“Matcha contains l-theanine, a natural substance that actually promotes relaxation, so you don’t feel jittery after drinking a cup,” she explained.
Emily Watson, marketing director and health coach at Green & Tonic in New Canaan and Darien agrees.
“The tea also contains cancer-fighting compounds that counteract the effects of UV and other environmental damage,” she said.

FIVE LOCAL WAYS TO GIVE MATCH A TRY
Go for the classic hot matcha latte with oatmilk. They use Oatly brand, which steams nicely, is super creamy and contains less sugar than dairy milk. Yum. neatcoffee.com
GREEN & TONIC
The Zenergy smoothie bowl will seriously fuel your day. It contains coconut milk, spinach, banana, almond butter, matcha, cinnamon and bee pollen—all meant to be topped with one of G&T’s delicious granolas, berries and nut butters. greenandtonic.com
Okay, so it’s not the health-iest option, but Mecha’s Matcha Mouth cocktail is a must-try. The coconut and honey add a velvety feel with a hint of scotch for a pleasant smoky finish. If you don’t do scotch, no problem, they also have a homemade matcha soda with notes of citrus. It’s refreshing without being too sweet. mechanoodlebar.com
GREENS ON THE GO
The new smoothie menu has some real gems, but the matcha mint chip is excellent. It’s lightly sweet with spinach, banana, almond yogurt, coconut milk, mint, cocao nibs and matcha and just might be as satisfying as going for ice cream, without
the sugar rush. greensonthego.us
