Modern Makeover

“I think you should love every item that you bring into your home. It can take time and patience to find those perfect pieces, but it’s worth the effort,” says Margaret Schwartz of The Summer House in New Canaan. To make the search a little easier, Schwartz moved her home decorating boutique to 107 Cherry Street and fine-tuned the inventory.  Here’s what you’ll find.

In her previous location, Schwartz offered both antique and new pieces. That combination is on display at the new showroom, too. “We like the mix and we believe it presents the strongest story in a home,” she says. In her new shop, she’s edited the collections and now carries only the things she and her clients really want. Among the popular contemporary brands are Worlds Away and Bungalow 5, and the variety of pieces reflect a range of price points. “We have some great contemporary pieces that make it easy to update a room.”

Schwartz has a passion for antiques and it shows in the store’s selection. “I go to Europe a few times a year to choose pieces in person. It’s important to touch and inspect the merchandise and know what you’re working with.” Her specialty is Swedish antiques, and she carries items from several eras. Says Schwartz, “They’re bright and beautifully simple designs that create a serene atmosphere. They’re also easy to incorporate into a room.”

Inventory at The Summer House changes every few months to keep curious customers satisfied. In addition, shoppers can now browse The Summer House selection at The Antique and Artisan Gallery in Stamford, where Schwartz recently opened a booth. Pieces are sold on that store’s website, too ( The online presence is timely with the holiday shopping season under way. Schwartz is also excited to announce a new on-site design service at the Cherry Street location. Megan Wunderlich of DesignDot is in-house to provide customers with interior design expertise and assistance. This is all part of the store’s goal to offer an updated approach to design and decor.
