Craig Panzano, Executive Director of the New Canaan YMCA, kicked off the ceremony by welcoming the community, sharing his thanks to donors, and discussing the impact this new facility will have on the community. “New Canaan is a great place but this is going to make it even more special,” said Panzano. Peter Skaperdas, President of the New Canaan YMCA Board of Directors further elaborated on the Y’s vision for a more welcoming, inclusive, and impactful community facility.
“I may be biased,” said Skaperdas, “but I think the New Canaan YMCA is the crown jewel of this community, and it will shine even brighter in 18 months when this project is done.”
This $20 million project will include brand-new and renovated locker rooms, a new full gym, a new family movement and activity center, renovated wellness areas, a new café and intergenerational space, as well as new aquatics center. The aquatics center will feature a completely renovated competition pool and a new warm pool facility. This area will provide an accessible and fun environment for families, swim lessons, and therapy swim, please a modern more accommodating facility for our lap swimmers, competitive teams, and high school swim teams. The projected is estimated to be completed in April 2017.
“We believe that a strong Y helps build a strong community,” said Skaperdas. “And, in this connection, we feel giving to the Y is one of the best ways to give back to New Canaan. There is no other place in the community where people across all generations, from a variety of different backgrounds, come together in a spirit of improving their health and well-being.”
The Y is extremely pleased with the support it has received from the community, and while successful to date, fundraising for this significant project continues.
