Interior design expert Annie Mahoney scoured New Canaan for just the right thing to update your outdoor space this summer.
“I have a couple of tride-and-true tips,” says Darien-resident Mahoney. “First of all, pillows are the place to add pop because they are easy to trade out from year to year so it isn’t a commitment. Also, a place to put your feet up is essential, so you can really live in your outdoor space. I think of my husband reading the paper with his morning coffee or me and a friend watching the children play. The most successful outdoor spaces seamlessly fuse your indoor environment with outdoor living.”
Here are some things Mahoney is coveting as she prepares for a summer in the sun:
You can use them outside and they are totally weather proof and can be used inside for a variety of things (extra seating, side tables, etc) when the summer entertaining season is over. Pimlico has two fantastic, architecturally interesting options, a Drum Stool that I love ($490, 20×12.25) for the earthy vibe, it’s reminiscent of an antique but with really modern lines. Also available is the Cole Stool in Crackled Gold ($625, 19x19x19) that updates any space. Brass has been a huge trend lately and this is a great way to bring that sleek look outdoors.
They are versatile and can mix with a retro vibe or a more traditional home. The Summer House’s Round White Metal Chair ($84, 26x22x29.25) is at a great price point for additional seating, and can blend with what you already have. The patina meshes with any color scheme and I love the shape; it’s so open and airy and seems just right for summer, though I would put a pair in front of a fireplace as well.
I love re-purposing indoor items for outdoor entertaining. Why not use a soft throw outdoors, it’s a great look texturally and women in summer dresses will appreciate it as the evening cools down.
The Summer House has three that I like. Blue is my favorite outdoor hue, think water and sky. Sunnyside Stripe in Aqua and Navy ($180, 22×22) is graphic and can be paired with any number of neutral tones. Who doesn’t love an animal print? Zebra Aquamarine ($180, 22×22) is just a fun way to do that. Super Paradise ($280, 22×22) would look great on a gray or green set.
